The title of this image is a reference to its composition. The edges of the foremost arch on the left and right of the image seek to pull your eyes away from what is happening beyond. Yet the archways themselves draw you in and you are compelled to look at the people even though you are aware of the constant tugging of the edges. The people themselves grasp at your interest. The couple in front moving purposefully forward, looking at what? The young boy walking away from the viewer – where is he going? And the old man in the background looking straight at us, watching us. Taken with an Olympus E-30 at Calke Abbey.
