Viltrox AF 56mm F/1.4 XF – thoughts.

As I posted here I recently purchased the Viltrox 56mm lens for Fuji. I have used it on several shoots and have a few thoughts.

I have been using it almost exclusively with my X-T5, and it does feel very nice on the camera. It is balanced and easy to use. I have got used to not moving the focusing ring as I hold the lens and the auto-focusing with the X-T5 is crisp and responsive. The aperture ring, whilst it does not click I have found to be reasonably “tight” on the barrel so it does not have a loose feel on rotation.

Contrast and definition on this lens are very good indeed with little distortion at the edges – that I could see. The wide apertures and the resultant out-of-focus areas are very nice and will make me come back to this lens again and again.

Below are some images that I have taken with the lens. They have all been processed in Lightroom Classic and Photoshop CC using my normal methods.

1/80 sec at f/11, ISO 125 -click to enlarge
1/250 sec at f/10, ISO 125 – click to enlarge
1/80 sec at f.5.6, ISO 160 – click to enlarge
1/600 sec at f/1.6, ISO 160 – click to enlarge

One other thing to mention is that I started using the lens with a clear protective filter. However, the excellent supplied lens hood is a very nice tight fit and even with a low-profile filter it was very difficult to get the hood on and off, so I am currently using the Viltrox without a filter.

So, if you have a Fuji and are looking for a reasonably priced portrait (or general usage) prime lens that delivers quality above its price point, then have a look at this Viltrox.
