TTArtisan 27mm F/2.8 Field Test

I attached the lens to my X-Pro2 and it suited the camera body very well. Not very long it made the camera less obtrusive – a good thing for street photography. I attached a filter to the lens to protect the front element and this was a good choice I think because the tiny lens cap for the 27mm is very fiddly. When I made to put the lens cap back on a couple of times with cold hands, my finger touched the filter and I had to clean it. In future, I will leave the lens cap in my bag.

The aperture ring is very precise and has none of the looseness that you can get with some lenses. The clicks for third-of-a-stop increments were definite and had a nice feel. The aperture doesn’t have finger grips around its circumference, it has two raised areas on opposite sides of the ring just like the Fuji X100 series. It’s not something I find comfortable and would prefer the aperture ring to have grips all around its edge, but you do get used to it.

I tested the lens at the Batsford Arboretum and the day had showers, sunshine and cloud cover. Focusing on the lens was excellent. It was fast and snappy using back-button focus. It’s communication with the camera body never faltered and the metering was very accurate. Some of the reviews I read said that the lens at f/2.8 was a little soft in the centre and whilst this might be obvious through pixel-peeping I did not find it an issue in post-processing.

Once I started to look at the photographs after downloading them I felt as though the lens had a certain “look” to its images, a “feel”. I immediately liked what the lens was doing for the scenes that I took. It was easy to use, and performed excellently and I recommend it to anyone who is looking for an alternative to the Fuji 27mm pancake lens.

Below are some of the images taken with the lens at the arboretum.
